She did not allow her hue to be determinative in a very white state. Esther Charlestin took the bull by the horn and won with the most votes to represent her community.
Esther Charlestin winning in Vermont teaches much.
One cannot express how impressive Ms. Esther Charlestin is until one speaks to her in person and absorb her energy and positivity. She exudes confidence, competence, and a desire for community service. That is the character we should all want in those we elect to serve.
Her exceptional attributes are such that all that one considers a hindrance in America is so outdistanced by them that she excels where one would not expect. Hell, she won in Vermont. And she did it with more votes than anyone as she became Selectboard Member in Middlebury.
Esther is the proud child of Haitian immigrants who decided to move to Vermont. When asked to run, she did so, not fearing losing but knowing she had it would have taken. That fearlessness is innate to her upbringing and her culture. We should all remember her descendants are from the land where Toussaint Louverture took his freedom and freed his nation.
The short statement on Ms. Charlestin’s site says it all.
In spending the last year learning Middlebury, I see there is more to be done – I will continue to do the work to make our community better brick by brick.
My hope is to keep the momentum by supporting businesses that are downtown, prioritize housing, support the library revamp project, and continue to make Middlebury a welcoming community through our work with Lisa Ryan & Tabitha Moore.
Esther said that at some point, she intends to be governor of Vermont. I do not doubt that she will. She is inspirational yet pragmatic. Please listen to the entire interview.
