In the nearly 50 years since it became the law of the land, the future of Roe v. Wade has never been more threatened. In the book ABORTION AND THE LAW IN AMERICA, Professor Mary Ziegler lays out the definitive legal history of the post-Roe era using a wealth of new primary sources, including the private collections of pro-life and pro-choice lawyers and activists, and unexplored papers of social movement organizations.

Mary Ziegler clarifies how the arguments and strategies of each side have morphed, how the fight has changed from one over individual rights to one over policy costs and benefits, and how the opposing movements have never been further apart or more distrustful of each other. Like in many aspects of our polarized political environment, pro-choice and pro-life advocates have increasingly disagreed about the basic facts, and Ziegler shows precisely how those dynamics have gotten us to a point where reproductive rights are on the brink of a seismic shift.
