In an era marked by political upheaval and polarization, the 2024 elections are shaping to be a decisive turning point in the United States. I was invited to the WAOK Morning Show with Angela Green to discuss these high-stakes elections, focusing on key players such as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Throughout the conversation, we tackled issues ranging from Trump’s checkered history with his base to Harris’ potential to make history as the first woman president.
The conversation started with Angela Greene‘s fascinating point: the possibility of internal turmoil within Trump’s camp. Some argue that his people might seek ways to push him aside quietly. This theory isn’t far-fetched when one considers the growing dissatisfaction within the Republican Party. Trump, despite his unwavering base, has increasingly become a liability for the party’s future, as indicated by his legal entanglements and erratic behavior.
It’s essential to highlight the extent of Trump’s diminishing influence among key Republican circles. While his die-hard followers remain loyal, there’s no denying that major GOP donors and establishment figures are beginning to eye other candidates. Figures like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott have garnered attention as potential alternatives. Yet, none have broken through in a way that dethrones Trump from his cult of personality. And ultimately, they fell in line and endorsed their fuhrer. What Trump represents, especially to his ardent base, is not just politics but an entire worldview centered on grievance and distrust of institutions—a dynamic that makes him harder to dislodge.
This electoral cycle isn’t just about personalities; it’s about the future of democracy. Vice President Kamala Harris, who’s taken on an increasingly prominent role in the administration, has become the target of right-wing smears precisely because of her effectiveness. As Angela and I discussed, Harris is often dismissed as lacking substance, but this critique is unfounded. From her work on immigration reform to her leadership on issues like climate change and voting rights, Harris has showcased her ability to govern on issues that matter to progressives and marginalized communities.
One of the central topics of our discussion was whether Harris stands a chance in the 2024 elections. The media continues to focus on a supposedly close race, but the ground realities tell a different story. As I mentioned on the show, Harris is narrowing the gap in traditionally red states like Iowa, Texas, and Florida while maintaining leads in battlegrounds like Michigan and North Carolina. This shift is a testament to her ability to resonate with a broad coalition of voters, especially as demographic changes favor Democrats.
The 2024 election will be decided by two critical factors: turnout and the Republicans’ attempts at voter suppression. The GOP knows it can’t win based on policy; their platform has been empty for years, serving only to funnel power to the wealthiest. That’s why voter suppression has become a central strategy. In states like Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina, there are concerted efforts to disenfranchise Black and Brown voters. On the show, I emphasized how crucial it is for people to verify their voter registration status and mobilize early. As Angela put it, Republicans will cheat if given a chance—but a massive voter turnout can counteract these attempts.
Harris has also led the charge on economic policies directly benefiting working families. One of the more underreported aspects of the Biden-Harris administration has been the child tax credit expansion, a policy that lifted millions of children out of poverty. Angela and I discussed the importance of this policy as part of a larger progressive vision. Harris plans to expand this credit even further, providing up to $6,000 for newborns and $3,600 for children under six. This is transformative for working-class families who often struggle with childcare costs. Unfortunately, the media has failed to communicate the benefits of this policy, focusing instead on trivialities or Trump’s never-ending controversies.
A central theme throughout the conversation was the importance of combating disinformation. Trump’s economic record, for example, is filled with failures—six bankruptcies, the fraudulent Trump University, and Truth Social, a social media venture hemorrhaging money. Yet, the narrative pushed by his loyalists is that he’s some economic genius. The sad truth is that the economic system in America often rewards people like Trump who manipulate laws and avoid paying their fair share. This is a system progressives expect to push Harris to reform on Day 1. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
One of the most contentious points of the show was the issue of reproductive rights. The conservative push to eliminate a woman’s right to choose has become more aggressive, and Trump is once again positioning himself as a warrior for the anti-choice movement. As I said on air, no man has the right to dictate what a woman can or cannot do with her body. Harris, on the other hand, has made it clear that she stands with women and will fight to codify Roe v. Wade into law if given the chance.
The WAOK Morning Show conversation should remind us of what’s at stake in the 2024 elections. It’s not just about individual candidates; it’s about the soul of the nation. Will we move forward with leaders like Harris, who champion equity, justice, and progress? Or will we fall back into the authoritarian grip of a figure like Trump, who thrives on division and fear?
As we approach Election Day, progressives must remain vigilant. Voter suppression, disinformation, and right-wing extremism are formidable obstacles, but they are not insurmountable. Through collective action, voter mobilization, and a commitment to the truth, a path to victory remains not only possible but probable. Kamala Harris can—and must—win, not just for herself but for all of us who believe in a more just and inclusive America.
