Teneshia Hudspeth, the Harris County Clerk, was interviewed on KPFT’s UTalk to discuss the local elections in Houston. The interview focused on the upcoming special election for the Senate District 15 seat and the Harris County Central Appraisal District (HCAD) election.

The special election for Senate District 15 is being held to fill the vacancy left by former Senator John Whitmire, now the mayor. The two candidates vying for the seat are Jarvis Johnson and Molly Cook. The election will occur on May 4th, with two days of early voting left. Voters can vote at 25 different early voting locations, and there will be 151 vote centers available on Election Day.

In addition to the Senate District 15 election, there is also a countywide election for the HCAD board. This is the first time appraisal district elections are being held in Texas. Harris County voters will decide who will represent them on the HCAD board, with three positions up for election.

The interview also addressed why there are separate elections for the Senate District 15 seat and the HCAD board. The Texas election code only allows primary elections during primary years; other entities cannot join the primary election.

The importance of the HCAD election was emphasized, as the board members play a crucial role in selecting those who set the tax rates for property owners in Harris County. The election gives voters a say in the appraisal district’s budget and policies.

The interview concluded with a reminder for voters to visit harrisvotes.com to find their sample ballot and locate their nearest voting center. The importance of local elections was highlighted, as these are the races that directly impact the community, and the elected individuals can be contacted for assistance or to voice concerns. The interview ended with a plea for voter turnout, as low voter participation allows others to make decisions on behalf of the community.
