Eve of the Election by Thomas Czarnik

On the Eastern front, Ukraine’s explodin'
Soldiers reloadin’, a frightnin’ forebodin’
You're old enough to vote but you aint a-votin'
You don't want civil war, but what's that gun you're totin'?
And even the Potomac may soon have bodies floatin'
But then you tell me over and over again my friend
That you don't care we're on the Eve of the Election
That you don't believe we're on the Eve of Destruction.
Don't you understand what I'm tryin’ to say?
Can't you feel the fear that I'm feelin’ today?
If Democracy’s destroyed, there's no runnin’ away
There'll be no one left to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy, it's bound to scare you, boy
But then you tell me over and over again my friend
That you don't care we're on the Eve of the Election
That you don't believe we're on the Eve of Destruction.
Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here just contemplatin'
We twist the truth, we know no regulation
Handful of Senators won't pass legislation
And talk alone can't bring reconciliation
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy country is just too frustratin'
But then you tell me over and over again my friend
That you don't care we're on the Eve of the Election
That you don't believe we're on the Eve of Destruction.
Think of all the violence and voter intimidation
Suppression and subversion, domination, discrimination
You may leave here and live for years in a space station
But when you return, it's the same old nation
The poundin' of eardrums, the pollution and the litter
You can post your hate and lies on Twitter
Threaten your neighbor but claim you’re not bitter
So why do you tell me over and over again my friend
That you don't care we're on the Eve of the Election
That you don't believe we're on the Eve of Destruction?
