Brian Smith discusses Unified’s social network for activism at Netroots Nation.

We need a better type of social media. As Brian Smith explains, Unified aims to do it strategically. They are clear that the likes of Facebook are not ideal.

Brian Smith describes a new Social Media.

Social media is now the wild-wild west. It is no longer an effective organizing tool as some expected it to be. That is why I wanted to talk to Brian Smith, the Head of Strategic Partnerships of the new company, Unified.

The Unified co-founder felt he needed to do something more than he had done with the previous company he created for organizing.

“After the 2020 election, I went back to the drawing board,” Shion Deysarka said. “I wanted to provide a platform that would help organizers and activists build real, lasting power. After months of research, I came to the conclusion that real power came from communities and that if we wanted to help the people fighting for change, we needed to give them something that would let them build strong communities around their causes. It was from this belief that Unified was born.”

The company has been working on building its tool since 2021. Most importantly, the tool has been developed with input from hundreds of organizers, activists, and volunteers since day one. Brian Smith said that Unified has and always will be a platform built by the community.

Please listen to the entire interview. I am sure you will find it enlightening.
