During the live program yesterday, Torry Mercer left a message that could not have been more prescient. After reading the first few paragraphs, I knew I wanted to interview Torry right away. You see, he sees something that people seldom see.

Countries with strong democracies have people that trust the government and feel safe. Americans left and right, do not trust the government and do not feel safe. There is a direct correlation here with gun culture. How to Fix America’s Gun Problem? Let’s break it down.

Both sides in the gun debate do not feel safe. Both sides are afraid. Parents are afraid their kids will be murdered by guns at school, in a church, at the park, at the store, in the street, in a car, in the mall, or at a party.

Meanwhile, Second Amendment peeps are afraid that a gun registry will lead to gun confiscations and a totalitarian government. Right-wing US gun-nuts don’t trust their own right-wing gun-nut government. I can’t blame them. As a lefty-Progressive historian, I know there is no history there to warrant trusting the US government with an unarmed population. Gun-wise, there are many historical precedents for this.

Mercer went on to correlate the fears of Right-WIng fanatics with what happened to the unarmed in Chile. In fact, he thinks that armed Chilean could have created enough chaos to allow the ascension of Augusto Pinochet after the overthrow of Salvador Allende.

But how do you keep people safe? Mercer expresses it in a message he sent me right after the interview.
