Rosalind Wyatt discovered a change in the Texas law sponsored by Congressman Mayes Middleton, an oppressive voter suppression bill HB 1026.

Wyatt visited with Politics Done Right to discuss draconian changes in how voter laws are implemented in Texas. She sent me the following note:
I’m calling to inform you if you don’t already know about Texas House Bill 1026 which was introduced recently by Mayes Middleton- Galveston (R) in the 2021 Legislative Session.
This bill is sinister and very ham-fisted in its effort to potentially disenfranchise current voters and greatly impede the registering of new voters. The bill language outlines that the responsibility of registering voters would move from the county clerk to the Texas Secretary of State. I am putting a link to the full text of the bill below but one thing that really stands out is that if the SOS office cannot confirm citizenship, then the applicant would have to show proof on citizenship IN PERSON. In other words, they would have to go all the way to Austin to show “their papers”. As you read the bill all the way through you will see that it gets more egregious throughout.
Please unpack this bill and go through it with a fine-tooth comb on one of your upcoming episodes. Time is of the essence since it’s not clear when this bill will come up for debate. This has the potential to negatively impact each and every Black and Brown voter in Texas.
